Lil Uzi Vert – That Way

Maybe it’s just the cabin fever from these coronavirus ‘stay at home’ orders kicking in but I’m enjoying Lil Uzi’s Backstreet Boys beat/hook jack way more than I expected to or should. While I had long adhered to The Martorialist’s decree of not taking rappers with nose rings seriously (with the exception of ALLBLACK  and maybe a couple of others), I can’t lie, Uzi is finally starting to grow on me; the production and some of the melodies on this ‘Eternal Atake’ album and the outtakes album he put out right after are fire and I love the album cover.

I never expected to hear a rap song interpolating the Backstreet Boys’ I Want it That Way that contains the line ‘They laugh at me because I’m Emo’, let alone enjoy it, but here we are. It’s like rap, 90s bubblegum pop from a ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ CD and goth all joining forces and coming together as one. The song drops off a bit in the second half but the big bombastic hook saves it.

There’s just something almost triumphant about the way Uzi chooses such an unexpected/difficult to execute concept to close the album, makes it a hit, and croons ‘If I wake up don’t make no money that’s a sad day, 2500 for the shirt that’s what the tag say’ all over it.

LBM Lil Joe – How You Want It

This unexpected and very effective Tupac ‘However You Want It’ beat jack was a pleasant surprise on LBM Lil Joe’s excellent ‘Slapp or Die 3’ mixtape that Crimedawg put me onto and after many spins became hands down my favorite song on the tape. This is a fun one to drive around to.

The hook is fire “However you want it, come to your city, I’m busting down in the trap really shipping out packs lil nigga I’m the plug for real,” with the fidelity to the original Tupac hook and LBM Lil Joe’s gruff voice making it even better, and I love the McDonald’s analogy at the beginning. LBM Lil Joe is evaluating his trap with the business acumen of a manager from McDonald’s corporate headquarters; billions and billions served, have it your way.

Rio da Yung OG – Copy Cats

“What up Sav?”

Rio might be the only thing out there that’s sicker than coronavirus. Regeneron needs to get Rio in the lab and have him cough up a few bars for them to use create the vaccine and save the world.

“30 shots hanging out the glock look like a hockey stick, 3 of Wok in a Chinese pop ain’t no jollies in it. Walk into the club wearing a trench coat with a shotty in it. Thought I seen an opp in here I was probably tripping. Put a nigga in a box I’ll Roddy Rich him. Bought some more black Balenciagas and caught a body in them.”

THE GOAT HAS SPOKEN.

Other rappers are walking into the club wearing tight jeans and effeminate designer shirts; Rio is just fine walking in looking like a suburban teenage Goth that may or may not have brought a strap to school. (Whether it’s Rio or ALLBLACK, I always get a kick out of real street rappers adapting the imagery of school shooters).

“The tips on these .308 bullets look like Jolly Ranchers, pole on me in the strip club damn near shot a dancer”

The imagery of the bullet tips looking like Jolly Ranchers is too good, and when you combine it with Rio’s comically ever-present casual disdain for exotic dancers it makes for a classic Rio line. This guy really is on his own plane of existence right now.

I also love Rio’s self-reflective earnestness when he says ‘Street nigga; when I jump out fresh I still look kind of tacky.”

Rio’s “City on My Back” is out now and after a couple of listens last night/this morning it definitley does not disappoint. And I’m sure I’ll listen to it about a dozen more times this weekend while I’m trying to ride out the coronavirus storm at my crib, so I’m sure there will be more posts about it. I’m going to try to actually buy this one to try to support Rio for all the entertainment he’s given me at this point.

P.S. I hope all you guys are safe/healthy out there with all this craziness going on

Rio da Yung OG x RMC Mike x Lil E – Still Spice Talkin

Rio dropped so much heat on City on My Back and now he’s back with even more heat that wasn’t even on the album. Rio links up again with RMC Mike to form their usual dynamic duo and also adds in his other frequent and lesser-known collaborator, Lil E who he did the ‘Professional Shit Talking‘ album with to morph into a triple threat as they rip this beat from Baby on the Track. For all the songs each has done together, I think this is the first time I’ve heard Rio, Mike, and E on the same song. Hotbox Social described Rio and E’s ‘Buy the Block’ as “basically the last regional rap song”. It’s too bad Peezy is still locked up and couldn’t get in on this one –  Rio and the boys really are the new Death Row.

It seems almost impossible for Rio to go harder than he already has but he somehow finds a way to keep pushing the envelope –

“I shop on one side of the set, I don’t sky walk, just seen an opp strolling, now that nigga sky walking”

“Don’t even know what dog drive, bro just shoot at every white Charger”

I’ve said before I love when everyone yells along with the line at the end of a verse to add emphasis i.e. here in ‘We’ve got the city hot from all the spice talking, BITCH SHUT THE FUCK UP WHEN ME, E AND MIKE TALKING, or on Big Wan’s ‘Fast Lane Lifestyle‘, or Rio and Big Colin’s ‘Ghetto Boyz‘

Mike comes roaring in as abrasive as ever. “Whole team doing good we worked our ass off. Doc I need an 8 of red I got a bad cough. Chilling in the trap with my fiend drinking Mad Dog.” And they really did work harder than anyone else, these guys have the best work ethic in the rap game right now. Mike is at home in the trap, he’s not just serving the fiends he’ll drink some Mad Dog with them.

And then Lil E comes barging in – don’t act like Lil E isn’t spitting he actually low-key may have the best verse and bring the most energy out of all of them on this one. “Nigga play with me? He might as well buy a coffin. Shot a nigga’s house up everybody in the house crawling.”

Would love to get more songs with all 3 of them on it or even a whole project, but I’m being greedy since ‘City on My Back’ just came out. Even the rest of the guys in Rio’s crew that don’t rap look intense.

P.S. – Is that the American Gothic painting on Rio’s hat??

Lil Uzi Vert – Baby Pluto

BRUH JUST CALL ME BABY PLUTO FROM NOW ON

Something about those opening notes and the ‘Welcome to Eternal Atake’ just gets me hyped up every time

Big Wan – Eggshell

Another highlight off of Big Wan’s ‘Dogslayers’ tape gets a video, although actually with the whole tape being about 13 minutes I guess the whole tape is really just the highlight. Glad to see/hear Big Wan is free.

Crimedawgbylaw summed this one up nicely better than I ever could and hits the nail right on the head  – ”

Every once in a while, I don’t realize how much I love a song until the music video drops and that was the case with this cut from Wan’s recent Dogslayers mixtape. Melo and RichieWitDaHitz’ sprawling piano on the intro perfectly matches the floating drone shots over Milwaukee and the image of Wan standing on a balcony with his arms spread out like the wings of an airplane. The city is Wan’s, despite recent legal trouble – as shown at the start of the video, Wan was one of 17 arrested in a drug trafficking investigation that recovered 900 grams of heroin, over 150 grams of a mixture containing fentanyl, 1.5 kilograms of cocaine, 20 kilograms of marijuana, nearly $300,000 in U.S. currency, and 53 firearms. For the time being, however, Wan is back on the streets and poised to become Milwaukee’s hottest young rapper.”

Preddy Boy P ft. CML, Philthy Rich – U Playin

CML is the go-to feature now for pimp rap. Nice one by Preddy Boy P fresh off a spot on last year’s top songs list with ‘Stay Dangerous‘ now with another banger featuring Lav and Philthy Rich. CML’s verse is on point as always, this is textbook CML right here.

One thing is clear, CML, Preddy Boy and the rest of the gang do not tolerate renegades.

“I’m the only nigga living on my block. I came a long way from hustling on that block.”

Rio da Yung OG – Groovy

Rio may be one of the hardest rappers out but don’t for a second think that he’s not groovy.

Every once in a while, I worry and think to myself wow rap has been around so long that I wonder if eventually rappers are going to run out of new things to say that actually rhyme, but then you have a creative maestro like Rio come up with something like this rhyme scheme here and you realize that he’ll never run out –

“Pop a perc drink a deuce of red that’s a perfect high/now I’m finna smoke half an ounce of turtle pie/auntie hide this brick for me, pull up your gurdle high/the green got a shell on my back I’m ninja turtle high”

Let’s hope Rio really makes good on his claim here that he might ‘drop 100 tapes this year I’m Gucci.’ I’ve been saying for a while now that Rio is the new Gucci in his prime.

Lil Uzi Vert – That Way

Maybe it’s just the cabin fever from these coronavirus ‘stay at home’ orders kicking in but I’m enjoying Lil Uzi’s Backstreet Boys beat/hook jack way more than I expected to or should. Ether x Fivio Foreign x Swipey

Could it really be any other song for top song of the month? As my boy The Martorialist would say, this is FUNCTION MUSIC, as opposed to functional music.

From the fact that it’s loosely a Waka Flocka Flame homage in 2019 to the Mexican sombreros to the ridiculously fuego spin move that they choreographed at 0:33 I’m down with everything going on here and want more of it.  This is the hottest song I’ve heard out of NYC (or pretty much anywhere) in a minute. Only in NY could you hear a rap song with no Hispanics in it mentioning bachata, pandejo, etc.  The beat is dummy hard too.

“Oh let’s do it like I’m Waka, met her out in Opa Locka, baked potato with the lobster, that’s my baby – Goo… Gaga”.

Added bonus in the Youtube comments is a female Doordash delivery driver saying that she watched the video because these guys told her to check it out when she delivered food to them.

This always amorphous Brooklyn GD/Blood/Crip beef is serious and Game of Thrones-level complicated but I think these guys are Envy Caine’s (who I’ve posted here before) opps based on my extensive research of Youtube comments but like I said last time I don’t want to wade into all that I’ve got love for everyone I’m just here to enjoy the slaps. I’ve got to check out more of these guys’ videos.

P.S. for the record I’m definitely strongly in favor of silkies making this big comeback in 2019 I’ve been seeing them everywhere lately.

Chief Keef x Zaytoven – Ain’t Gonna Happen

I can’t believe how little fanfare this Keef/Zaytoven album got, I feel like a couple of years ago this would have broke the internet. I didn’t even know about it until like a month after it was out and I would like to think I am one of the world’s biggest Sosa fans. The project was really good overall with this being by far my favorite track and Spy Kid being another highlight. I love this crooning version of Keef that we hear from time to time especially over this great twinkly piano beat from Zaytoven. I’m glad Keef is doing whatever he wants now and really experimenting/pushing his boundaries musically and getting to enjoy himself out in California after he has lost so many people close to him. Keef has nothing to prove in my opinion and this is probably a topic/article for another day but is one of if not THE most creative/influential artist of the 2010s in my opinion.

“Come on my property I turn you to a french fry, turn my front yard to a fish fry, I see Big Glow in the big sky crazy how I turned into the big guy.”

“Face dried up, from all of the tears that I cried up, lost most of the niggas I would ride for.”

By the way I forgot all about Tadoe! I wonder what he’s up to.

Chief Keef x Zaytoven – Spy Kid

Like I said antother higlight from the Keef/Zaytoven project.

GLOTOVEN OR NO TOVEN!

San Quinn – Ain’t Nobody Thuggin

CALIFORNIA KID LIKE…. TOM BRAZY

San Quinn has got over 25 years in the game at this point and he’s still putting out heat. This beat is slapping like a San Fran pimp when the money ain’t right. That voice singing the hook is so dope. I love the video too with the shots of the bridge and the waterfront.

“Big wads, new cars, move around with 10 large, for a verse 10 large after this I’m finna charge”

“We ain’t sippin Hen we sippin’ Dom Perignon, move along square nigga let the mob carry on”

I lied when I previously said I hadn’t been keeping up with the Mozzy/Philthy/Messy Marv/Lav beef because now its quickly become my new favorite topic. Quinn could probably advise the Philthy/Lav camp on beefing with Messy Marv as Messy was beefing with him about a decade ago even though he’s his own cousin! This guy is a loose cannon.  Wouldn’t mind getting a remix of this with Lavish on here and maybe a couple of Frisco rappers – dare I suggest Berner anyone?

Daz Dillinger ft. Layzie Bone – Gotta Get That Money

Between this and Bizzy Bone’s diss tracks to Migos, I’m down with this unexpected but welcome mini Bone Thugs resurgence that we’re getting in early 2019. The sample and that ethereal beat behind it in the beginning sound so dope. I wonder if we’ll actually get a whole project out of this Daz & Layzie collaboration it would be cool to get a full album from them. I love the production here and Layzie sounds smooth on the hook. There’s something just relaxing about listening to this, for lack of a better word.

“Looking at the world like it’s my oyster, closed mouths don’t get fed, little nigga turn your voice up”

Also anyone else feel like Daz sounds kind of like Rozay on his verse?

Nipsey Hussle – Real Big

RIP to Nip, seems like it was a long time ago but it was really just this month.

Lil Uzi Vert – Sanguine Paradise

I guess it’s true that absence makes the heart grow fonder becuase I wasn’t really feeling Uzi that much and generally subscribe to the Martorialist’s school of thought on embargoing rappers with septum rings but I’m feeling some of these new leaks that Uzi is putting out now that we haven’t heard from him in so long. I’m kind of intrigued/surprisingly anticipating Eternal Atake to hear what it sounds like when it comes out if DJ Drama ever frees Uzi to release it. Also wouldn’t it be the ultimate marketing scheme by Drama if this whole thing with him stopping Uzi from releasing new music was just a ploy to build up anticipation for the album? That would be on like Suge/Birdman mastermind level.

DJ Paul ft. Beanie Sigel – Real Money

Admittedly I wasn’t feeling this song but I’m more posting it out of anticipation of getting a full project of Paul and Beanie collaborating in 2019 which would be awesome. We could definitley use a Beanie resurgence in 2019 we need some of that Carhartt and Dickies hustling out in the cold type rap. This would be a wild mix for an album but hopefully it comes into fruition.

Three 6 Mafia – Paul, With Da 45 / Three 6 Mafia – Ridin in da Chevy

Speaking of DJ Paul, I was bumping a bunch of old Three 6 this month. Beat at around 0:52 of ‘Paul with da 45’ is so crazy.

I love the ‘Every time you see the Chevy riding it be full of FOLKS’ at the end of Riding in Da Chevy.

It’s incredible how well this stuff holds up in today’s rap climate.

Envy Caine ft. Cooaxh Da Ghost – Woo K

The ‘Waka’ track had me inspired to go back and delve into this whole Brooklyn drill scene and this GDs/Bloods/Crips beef and go back to one of my favorites from last year Envy Caine to see what he’s been up to.

Apparently I’m already late on ‘Woo K’ because ever the beef connoisseur, Envy has already released a ‘Woo K Pt. 2’. This goes hard as fuck. Definitley more ‘functional music’ than ‘function music’ though.

I love how Envy looks like an angry NFL coach giving a firey halftime pep talk to his team at halftime about how they’re giving up too many big plays and need to hit harder in the second half.

Envy stays with these European soccer jerseys with Juventus here and I always see him rocking Bayern Munich gear too.

Coaxh the Ghost is intense I have to check out more of his stuff.

Pop Smoke – Meet the Woo

If we’re posting Woo K I guess it’s only right that we post Meet the Woo. This song is catching a lot of buzz in NY quickly. Pop Smoke’s voice is kind of cool and makes this sound even more aggressive.

03 Greedo, All Star Lee, Birdman, Brodinski, Drake, Joe Blow, Kevin Gates, Lil AJ, Lil Baby, Lil Frost, Lil Reek, Lil Uzi Vert, Mannie Fresh, Playboi Carti, Pusha T, Q Money, Quando Rondo, Rick Ross, Sherwood Marty, Tee Grizzley

Guys sorry I’m late with this May top 10 and posting it in June, and have been MIA for the last week, I’ve been holed up in a cabin in Wyoming, wearing wierd clothes, working on my next album…

Kevin Gates – Change Lanes

Gates is really baring his soul on this one. Right from the opening bar this one hits you…”Been through a lot of pain in my life and I pray the Lord take it all away. I’ve got family doing life that’ll never see the sun shine again and I pray it all away. Gates touches on a lot of heavy, real topics in his life in ‘Change Lane’s, including his time in prison in Illinois, incarcerated family members, wanting to pull back from public life/fame, and, also, McDonald’s salads and rocking Islamic fashion out in Paris. This is off Gate’s 3 song ‘Chained to the City’ EP, his first work after being freed, and I’ve got to say, Gates is back in a big way because that EP was ridiculous. Not to mention the work he’s been putting in and posting the snippets of on Instagram; I almost want to include a couple of those as my top songs of May as well but I feel like that would be cheating a little.

Kevin Gates – Vouch

As much as I love ‘Change Lanes’, ‘Vouch’ might be even better. The singing, warbling Gates might be my favorite type of Kevin Gates. “I do for me I feed myself my crew not willing to help me, we either die or go to jail so what the fuck could you tell me. Fully loaded Mac 11 when this pressure get applied; got a brand new Glock 90 and I keep it by my side. That part starting at around 2:15 just sounds absolutely heavenly; “”I ain’t never change up, let’s get that understood, I’m in that 70805 they don’t show love in my hood.”

Lil Baby ft. Drake – Pikachu

Damn it feels like this came out a year ago instead of a few weeks ago, what with all the sniping back and forth between Drizzy and Pusha T just completely usurping everyone’s collective attention span, not to mention Drake announcing his ‘Scorpion’ album and then of course the new .

From the original article…

While I wouldn’t have gone as far as to call myself a Drake ‘hater’, I think the old, healthier but less enlightened me would have perhaps best been described at the very least as a ‘Drake skeptic’ or a ‘Drake nonbeliever’. I wasn’t that into his early stuff when he first started blowing up and later on I really couldn’t stand most of his hits over the last few years like Controlla and One Dance. More than anything I kind of just considered him to be bland elevator music. But I’ll be the first to admit, and as someone whose been critical, I feel responsibility to give credit where credit is due; I’ll be damned if Drake’s last couple of songs haven’t been absolute bangers. He’s had a good 3-4 songs or more in a row (this one with Lil Baby, his song with Trouble on the ‘Edgewood’ album, ‘Look Alive’ with Blocboy JB, and I’ll admit I was even down with Nice for What even though that was definitely shamelessly pandering to the ladies. I also didn’t mind God’s Plan.) that have forced me to mention them with the same disclaimer every time, ‘I’m not a big Drake fan but…,’ so I don’t know if he’s actually getting better or if I’m just going soft in my old age but I’m slowly…becoming a fan??? That was hard to type!

Whether you love him or have him, (or should I say – whether you’re siding with him or Pusha T in the new World War 3?) the man has a pretty unassailable ear for great beats, and if he retired from rapping he would make a great A&R he has an eye for up and coming talent. He has a penchant for working with hard, down south rappers like Blocboy, Trouble, and now Lil Baby. Drake is like the 2018 version of 2017 Berner to me.

Enough about Drake though, Lil Baby is actually the real headliner here. His verse/flow is crazy. He’s another artist I was kind of tepid on at first, not that I disliked him but just none of his songs really jumped out at me, but I loved this song, and ‘I Remember’ with Quando Rondo, and ‘Day in my Hood’ with Sherwood Marty were pretty solid jams so I’m starting to become more and more of a fan. I’ve also warmed to his hits like ‘A-Town’ and ‘My Dawg’. ‘Trap Star’ while delving into his previous work in preparation for ‘Harder than Ever’.

Drake is doing his best Hoodrich Pablo Juan impression on this one. Side note on the Drake verse – he says ‘my shorty a goodie’; most of my friends have been calling bad bitches baddies have they been doing this all wrong? My favorite part is where Lil Baby sings, ‘Waaah waahhh waaahhh bitch I’m the Baby’.

Another side note – apparently on the album this song is called ‘Yes Indeed’ but when it dropped on Youtube they were calling it Pikachu and I’m still calling it that.

YELLOW FERARRI LIKE PIKACHU, CARTIER LENSES I WON’T EVEN PEEK AT YOU

All Star Lee – Cash Money Flow

Flammable song by All Star Lee out of Detroit. I’m loving the throwback Orlando Magic jerseys and the soulja rags in this Cash Money homage.

Lil AJ, Joe Blow, Lil Frost

Dope song from two workmanlike Bay Area stalwarts who don’t get as much love/hype outside of the Bay as some of the bigger names from out there, but who are pretty much always reliable for solid, real music. I’m starting to like Lil AJ’s stuff more and more over time. “Lash Money burning bridges nigga, see an opp slipping in traffic and them niggas get the business nigga, rest in peace Boss Nuge and the nigga Jack, catch me out in traffic riding with the mini MAC”.   I didn’t realize Lil Frost had passed away until I saw this video; and it took me a minute to realize what was going on. His verse being overlaid by old clips of him rapping interspersed with the scenes from his funeral, since he wasn’t here to shoot the video, was straight up heartbreaking and actually hit me pretty hard since I wasn’t expecting it. RIP to Frost man, gone too soon.

Pusha T ft. Rick Ross – Hard Piano

Some people are mad about the album cover, some people love it. Some people feel like Drake bodied Pusha with his diss track, and other people feel like Pusha ended Drake with his response. Regardless of all that, there were some straight up slaps on ‘Daytona’ (I love that name by the way), my favorite amongst them being ‘Hard Piano’. Kanye really did work his magic on the beats on this one, regardless of his recent controversies and what some would call his subpar rapping on ‘Ye’, the guy is in the zone right now on the boards, this album had some of the best beats/production I’ve heard in a while. I like the combo of Pusha and Rozay. If Ross is sounding like this, I can’t wait for his comeback album.  It’s funny I didn’t realize how much I missed prime Ross until I heard this. Yeah he’s another artist with plenty of questionable moves/songs over the years but at the end of the day he’s still here, he’s been through a lot, he has a lot of dope songs over the years throughout his catalogue and I’m looking forward to what he has to say on his next album.

“The Warhols on my wall tell a war story.”

“Chilling in a condo full of ready rock”

As much as I like my rappers and their music to be ‘real,’ sometimes some straight up luxury/over the top drug kingpin rap can be dope too, if it’s imaginative and really paints a picture for you, which I feel like Hard Piano does.

Mannie Fresh & Birdman

This was uh… unexpected… and ridiculous. Man I love Mannie Fresh. Such a classic Mannie Fresh type beat! I could have lived without the 3 minutes of vignettes that randomly interspersed throughout the song that kept interrupting it but on the other hand I loved the video itself with the New Orleans mardi gras band in the street with them. Any time you get Mannie actually rapping on a track is always a good thing; he’s just so happy and jovial – “$100,000 in a brief case, orange Lamborghini yours with the dealer plates… Bricks, pounds, scales, weed, went to Hiroshima came back speaking Japanese.” The chorus for this one is super menacing; ‘Note around his neck saying get right with the Lord.” I don’t know if Big Tymers is back but if we could get some more stuff from Mannie or even a full Big Tymers project that would be a pretty nice surprise.

Pusha T – If You Know You Know

Another dope song off of Daytona. The production is so good. ‘If You Know You Know’ is going to be big this summer. I bumped Daytona so many times over Memorial Day weekend.

Quando Rondo – Paradise

I put ‘Paradise’ up in April’s top 10 but I only heard it at the end of the month and I really bumped it much more in May so I’m kind of cheating here. Quando Rondo is dope I’m starting to get into this new wave of Atlanta guys like him, Lil Baby, and Gunna which I wasn’t expecting.

Lil Reek ft. Brodinski – Rock Out

I’m surprised this hasn’t blown up actually. Maybe it’s just because it’s a change of pace but I love this kid’s voice!

And that’s my top 10 for May but here’s a couple of bonus tracks for ya since this month was one of the best in a long time…

03 Greedo – Fortnite

FREE GREEDO!

Q Money – Countin’ Up a Check

Tee Grizzly – Colors

Sherwood Marty ft. Lil Baby – Day in My Hood

Playboi Carti ft. Lil Uzi – Shoota

P.S. I usually follow the Martorialist’s embargo on rappers with septum rings but I’m not going to lie this one with Lil Uzi from Playboi Carti’s new album was just too catchy not to mention here.

Top 10 Songs May 2017

It’s late in the month but still in time for May, so as I patiently (or not so patiently) wait for Chief Keef’s long-awaited ‘Thot Breaker’ album (which I’m very hopeful will be a seminal addition to his catalogue) to be released, here are my top 10 songs for May 2017 with mostly current songs and one or two suprising throwbacks and outliers.

Creek Boys – With My Team

Creek Boys made a late charge to come out of nowhere and win the crown for top song in May right at the end of the month; see my full article about this ridiculously catchy/infectious song with a nice message here

DJ Khaled ft. Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper, Lil Wayne – I’m the One

Only the most hardened of cynics or someone who just wants to hate could say they’re not down with this global smash hit by Khaled and some of the biggest names in rap music and beyond. I feel like this song also really solidifies Quavo’s place as a superstar in the genre in his own right. See my full article on ‘I’m the One’ here

Nef the Pharoah ft. Slimmy B – Bling Blaow

‘Bling Blaow’ off of Nef the Pharoah’s excellent Chang Project album is definitely one of the hardest songs I’ve heard in a while. I love the aggression of the chorus and the way the beat hits, plus the hard as nails verses from Nef and his fellow Vallejo native Slimmy B (of SOB X RBE). There are almost too many awesome, brutal punchlines to choose from but to narrow it down to a top 3 I particularly liked ‘Icy neck full of rocks/this b*tch I wear would make the Titanic stop”, “My neck is on loud, your neck is on SHUT UP” and the almost impossibly obnoxious “Twinkle twinkle punk ass star, how come your diamonds don’t hit that hard? My sh*t hit like a pimp hits his broad, my sh*t hits like the bass in a car.” I also love how far they take the arrogance of mocking rivals for wearing fake chains and ones they buy at the mall, you almost feel like Nef is personally offended by their brokeness.

Here are my top 10 tracks for March, click the link below the first couple of them to read/listen to the full top 10, and enjoy

Valee – Shell

Starting off this month is a song I played about 500 times by a newer (at least to me) artist from Chicago, Valee. Clocking in at barely over a minute and a half, I love the simplicity and minimalism used here. I have to give credit to one of my favorite blogs, somanyshrimp.com  as I first heard this on Episode 5 of their great new podcast that they put up every couple of Sundays now. The plot of the story can be condensed into Valee describing a trip to a Shell gas station. As someone who spends a lot of time on the road I can certainly appreciate the appeal of taking a break walking into a Shell or Exxon to grab a cool beverage, although admittedly mine aren’t usually as syruppy as Valee’s.  My favorite part is the description of the Margielas as ‘bumpy Margielles, feel like braille’ something about this description of them makes them sound so luxurious. Also of note in the video is the nice old school Chevy that Valee is taking out for a ride from a very anonymous looking storage unit.

Ripp Flamez – Church in the Projects

I found out about this song on one of my favorite sites, and one I feel like I’ve been checking for as long as I can remember, Dirty Glove . This whole mixtape, Project Melodies, by Ripp Flamez is incredible and very different than anything else out right now, and definitely deserves more views/listens than it already has. I don’t know a lot about the artist Ripp Flamez but he is from Ohio and has a really unique voice/delivery it’s almost more singing than rapping. I could have went with a number of songs from this mixtape for my March Top 10, including standouts like ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Blurry’ but I decided to go with the project’s finale, ‘Church in the Projects’ because overall it was the best track to me and was haunting and alluring all at once. You’ll have to listen to it for yourself but there’s just something resilient that stops you in your tracks about the opening/chorus as he sings ‘I keep my hand on the Bible/they won’t understand I’m a man from the projects/I won’t stand through the nonsense/I’m just a man from a land full of violence.”
