ALLBLACK, Cash Kidd, DaBoii, JusJay R, Lil Yachty, Louie Ray, Rio Da Yung OG, RMC Mike, Velly Beretta, YN Jay

ALLBLACK ft. Daboii, Cash Kidd – Pizza Rolls (2020)

Rio da Yung OG x JusJay R x Velly Beretta x RMC Mike – Kitchen

I think it’s about time I finally cop some of this Autoworld gear.

This might be a new top song of the year contender for me, off the strength of Rio’s hook and off of the third guy’s verse. Before this video I wasn’t even sure if the third guy was JusJayR or Velly Beretta but I’m feeling this verse and at this point I’m feeling it so much it might be my new frontfunner for verse of the year. It’s hard to really stand out when you’re on a song with Rio because usually his verses gobble up all the oxygen in the room but this guy (found out after that he’s Velly) pulls it off.

ā€œSuper solid, ain’t never been on no frail shit. My niggas know if I get caught I ain’t gon tell shit. Dolce Gabanna on my body bitch I smell rich, unemployment got me looking like I sell bricks

Or looking like I’m on my freelance. Boy you dumb as fuck if you ain’t get none of those free bands. I ain’t get my stimulus they sent it to my BM. As long as I keep paying forthe court I’m a free man. Lay a nigga down just so he can see how we land. Going superhuman on this bitch I’m on my He Manā€

I love the hand motion at ā€˜unemployment got me looking like I sell bricks’ and the flex at ā€˜Going superhuman on this bitch’. Kudos to Velly for breaking the typical mold of rapping about trapping or scamming to talk about unemployment checks, stimulus checks, and perhaps most surprisingly of all, freelancing. I’m picturing Velly posted up at a Starbucks somewhere outside Flint with his laptop open Zooming with an editor making changes to an article he’s working on or going on Upwork and assigning tasks to a bunch of graphic designers in the Philippines. For some reason the going Superhuman on this bitch I’m on my He Man part gets me super hyped up.

And it’s not just the verse itself but also just the casual swagger and the smooth flow that it’s delivered with.

ALLBLACK ft. Daboii, Cash Kidd – Pizza Rolls

Cash Kidd and ALLBLACK joining forces (Ray Garraty pointed out to me that this isn’t the first time) and they’re both sort of the supremely talented wildcards/jokers in the deck of their respective Bay area/Detroit scenes. When I first read the title I thought it said ā€˜DaBaby’ instead of ā€˜DaBoii’ which would have made for an even wilder combination. ALLBLACK and Cash Kidd just stomp all over this crunchy production. It would probably be too much to ask but would be interesting to get a joint mixtape from these two.

Could any other rapper besides ALLBLACK pull off the line ā€œAlways been a piece of shit, used to piss in the tub?ā€ (Used to drink a 4 Loko and then ride through the Dubs) Especially as the opening line for a song? Lol.

ā€œI’m finna cut my hair and change my name to DMX… paranoid as fuck I’m in the window like I’m Malcom X… in the Gucci store got white hos breaking their necksā€ ALLBLACK definitley has some DMX in his game and I would not be opposed to seeing him embrace that angle further.

This hook goes super hard; it may be the first time I’ve heard Scottsdale mentioned in a rap song, and the eating addicts back to back part is fire. I was wondering where the ā€˜pizza rolls’ in the title would come from and here we are.

CLEATS ON, JOGGERS ON, GLOCKY ON, SCOTTSDALE UP TO PORTLAND I GOT IT SOLD, FOUR TOURS IN ONE YEAR, I’M NEVER HOME, EATING ADDICTS BACK TO BACK LIKE THEY PIZZA ROLLS

Cash Kidd just swoops in at the end like a bat out of hell. I love the ā€˜Cameras on the front and back who you creeping on?ā€ and ā€œThe opps soft I don’t know how their bitches feel safe with themā€ lines

Lil Yachty x YN Jay – Blind Em

Looks like Lil Yachty really took Hotbox Social’s advice to heart about ā€œtaking advantage of Flint’s cheap housing market to stay in town for a whileā€ because here he is AGAIN with artist of the year candidate YN Jay. Seriously he must be feeling right at home in ā€œVehicle Cityā€ since they did Flintana there over a month ago, I love to imagine he’s been there the entire time in a cheap rental house. Somebody get this man an Autoworld hoodie!

I was never super into Yachty (although I did love Minnesota when it came out tbh) but he seems at home with these Flint guys like Hotbox says and he’s been going hard on these Flint/Detroit beats so I’m warming to him. And I’ve got nothing but respect for the fact that he was doing ads for Sprite/Nautica etc. and he’s equally comfortable posting up in Flint so I feel like he’s really there for the love of the game.

Does anybody in the game have a better flow than YN Jay right now? And has anyone glowed up more in 2020? I feel like it’s YN Jay’s world and we’re all getting accustomed to living in it. My one gripe – they need to get Rio into one of these Yachty/Flint collabs!

ā€œOh they said the opps in the party? I’ma still comeā€

P.S. is Enrgy the producer of the year for 2020?

YN Jay x Louie Ray – Reflection

Still the best flow in the game in 2020. I be talking to myself like is that really you? And may I just add, YN Jay and Louie Ray are looking pretty fly in all this Lakers gear, especially now that the Lakers added that black trim to it.

YN Jay – Coochie Land

More magic from YN Jay and Enrgy. I’m going to have to write more about this YN Jay Coochie Land album later on. One thing I have to say is he is taking this Coochie Man persona very, very seriously. It took me a couple of listens and it seems like it shouldn’t work but this wierd Enrgy evil carnival sounding beat with YN Jay yawning about being in Coochie Land on it really grew on me.

The “Ape family did it first opened up the gate, I closed my eyes said a prayer niggas stole my plate, nigga died drowned in the water tryna hold my weight” line was fire.

ALLBLACK ft. Daboii, Cash Kidd – Pizza Rolls

Was not expecting an ALLBLACK/Cash Kidd collaboration but on second thought perhaps I should not have been that surprised to see them joining forces, they’re both sort of the supremely talented wildcards/jokers in the deck of their respective Bay area/Detroit scenes. When I first read the title I thought it said ‘DaBaby’ instead of ‘DaBoii’ which would have made for an even wilder combination. ALLBLACK and Cash Kidd just stomp all over this crunchy production. It would probably be too much to ask but would be interesting to get a joint mixtape from these two.

Bankhead, Big Fonz, Cash Click Boog, Cash Kidd, Icewear Vezzo, Larry Byrd, Lavier, Rio Da Yung OG, Sterl Gotti

A lot of Cash Kidd this month, and really not much else…

Cash Kidd ft. Icewear Vezzo, Sterl Gotti, Lavier, Rio da Yung OG – See You (2020)
Cash Kidd – Barefoot (2020)
Cash Kidd – Kiddnapper (2020)
Cash Click Boog – Come Back (2020)
Bankhead ft. Larry Byrd, Big Fonz – Swipe Yo Line (2020)

Cash Kidd ft. IceWear Vezzo, Sterl Gotti, Lavier, Rio da Yung OG – See You (2020)

Man I had heard this a few months ago and seen Ray Garraty post it and it was one of those things where I was like ‘Oh nice all of my favorite rappers on one track’ and expecting it to be the best thing I ever heard and for whatever reason when I first listened to it the one time it wasn’t clicking with me and I forgot about it andĀ  never went back to it.

Now, bumping the Cash Kidd album ‘No Socks’ that it came out on, giving it another chance, it’s hitting me in a different way and it’s been like a revelation of biblical proportions. This has become one of my all-time favorites.

“Throw these Balencis on the wire after I wear them tonight. I keep a big 30 on me and I carry a knife.”

I love Cash Kidd’s callous disregard for material things; yeah he’ll buy the Balenciagas because he’s bored and because you can’t but fuck it, he’ll throw them up on the wire after he wears them tonight. He keeps a big .30 on him AND he carries a knife.

“Bought a crib in Canton because the area nice, I’m barely there but I watch the cameras every night.”

I’m also feeling that posessed, dark side version of Cash Kidd when he’s singing ‘When I seeee you, when I see yooouuu”

I am decidedly in the camp of fans of Icewear Vezzo but it would be unfair to expect him to keep up with probably the two best lyricists in the game right now in Cash Kidd and Rio but while he can’t do that, you know what? He absolutely fucking bodies this track with just the sheer energy he brings to it and his unique style. I love the Icewear voice no homo and every time his verse comes on on this I get hyped. “WHEN THEY SEE US CHANGE SHIFTS LIKE WORKING MAN”

I don’t know much about Lavier and I kind of slept on his verse at first but after a few listens you realize that his verse is on the next level, with next dimension lines like “These hoes don’t want you in their presence til you lit like Christmas trees.’ I’m almost a little frigthened by the ‘shout out my nigga G, dog been getting tortured for that little shit he did to me.’ Part of me is curious to know what the guy did/what they’re doing to him but honestly I probably don’t want to know! “Big eyes with the gat but hoes on me like I’m spongebob, feels like yesterday I was the poorest in that lunch line, free my pops, we just chopped it for the one time, I could be a star but they don’t want to see the sun shine.”

I NEED to start finding more Lavier verses or he needs to start rapping more because he’s a beast.

And then of course, you get the Rio verse as the grand finale. I love hearing Rio rap over this light piano type beat.

“You know I’ma up the heat when I see you. Fiberglass on the pistol that bitch see-through.”

“Sorry I’m aggressive off this perc I can’t crack a smile, I robbed a nigga with a (???) for a half a pound, I got it from my granddad the handle crocodile.” I absolutely love when rappers talk about old straps, like Rio here talking about his granddad’s Saturday night special with the crocodile-skin handle or ALLBLACKtalking about stealing his granddad’s revolver and taking it to school.

I feel like this is a zenith for the whole Detroit/Flint scene that’s been taking over for the last few years, and should go down as one of the all-time great posse tracks.

Cash Kidd – Barefoot (2020)

I’ve been a little quiet lately but I’m back in the game. Been bumping the latest Cash Kidd album ā€˜No Socks’ non-stop this week off the strength ofĀ Ray Garraty’sĀ recommendation and it might be my favorite project of the year so far after City on My Back.

Move over Barefoot Contessa, Cash Kidd is taking over the barefoot lane here.

Man shout out to Cash Kidd for having the courage to have some extra thick video thots, I can definitely get behind it.

Beat is fucking flames and Cash Kidd is underrated with the hooks this one has been in my head all week. ā€œLike a butcher let ’em meet the chop!ā€

ā€œOnly thing I’m scared of is the copsā€ unfortunately rings to true, fuck 12

ā€œWe running through these scrips like its practiceā€

ā€œTold my ex bitch toĀ KwameĀ a river, Kilpatrickā€

ā€œAin’t gotta swipe no more, I’m still swipingā€

No homo I’m usually not into designer but I’m feeling Cash Kidd’s Versace t shirt and the light blue/yellow/gray color combo

Cash Kidd – KiddnapperĀ

Another highlight fromĀ No Socks.Ā Just heard it on the album and didn’t realize it had a video from a few months ago. One thing that I love about Cash Kidd is that while he has the clever/over the top punch lines likeĀ Ray GarratyĀ has mentioned (like ā€˜One wrapper with five sticks like a pack of gum’ in Barefoot or ā€˜Whacked a broke opp thought he had some money til I punched a donation to his go fund me’ here) and the creative (maybe sometimes evenĀ tooĀ creative!) wordplay aerobics like ā€˜Kwame a river, Kilpatrick’ or ā€˜Get My shell like Barack’, he also is so effortless with his more casual boasts and brags like here with ā€œIn an opp hood getting gas, I’m so comfortable.ā€ He throws the line out so casually/easily but something about it just paints such a picture about him – the relaxed, cool confidence he freely moves about his city with and the relaxed, dismissive disdain he has for the opps.

P.S. I’m not sure what Don World is but I’m feeling the Don World hoodie.

Glad to see the video has over 2 million views it seems like Cash Kidd is starting to get the recognition his work ethic and skill deserves

Cash Click Boog – Come BackĀ

I’m glad Crimedawgbylaw posted this quick hitter from Cash Click Boog, otherwise I would have missed out on it. Boog was up there with my Rio last year for my ‘rapper of the year’ when I did my year-end post, but I haven’t heard as much output from him this year. I can’t fault him for that becuase he blessed us with so much heat last year. But in any case, ‘Come Back’ is a nice start for 2020. I love the beat and the way the almost forlorn piano loop of seems to build up to a crescendo only to evaporate into nothingness.

“ITS BEEN HARD TO BUST A SCRIP THEY’VE BEEN CRACKING DOWN, BARAK GOT A GLOCK WITH A BLUE FLAG WRAPPED AROUND”

“50 rounds in my coat, bitch I’m top heavy”

Bankhead ft. Larry Byrd, Big Fonz – Swipe Your Line

A beat jack of Brandi’s ‘Boy is Mine’ reimagined as an anthem for scammers was exactly what I had been missing in my life, and I didn’t know it.

Shout out to the Crimedawg again for this one. It’s obviously meant for comedic value but it’s also actually fire

And then of course, you get the Rio verse as the grand finale. I love hearing Rio rap over this light piano type beat. Actually, I love hearing everyone over this beat but Rio especially since it’s not his usual style he’s usually rapping over harsher/more dystopian stuff, but let’s take a minute to appreciate how nice this piano loop is. Unfortunately I don’t even know who made it so can’t give them proper credit here but would love to know.

“You know I’ma up the heat when I see you. Fiberglass on the pistol that bitch see-through.”

Cash Kidd – Barefoot

42 Dugg, Bagboy Mel, Big Rizz, Cash Kidd, EWM Buck, EWM Kdoe, Kevin Gates, Kodak Black, Mozzy, Offset, Peezy, Rod Wave, T-Shyne, Travis Scott, Young Thug

I’m so late yet again bruhs… here’s my top 10 songs for October… I’m cheating here too because I’ve got about a dozen songs again this time

Kodak Black – ZezeĀ

This had to be number one for October. Or basically a tie between this and the Peezy/Cash Kidd song for 1A/1B.

From original article…

Zeze finally came out and it had your host walking into Midwestern travel plazas and Quaker Steak & Lubes going ā€˜Bum bum bum bum bum’ and pretending to play the steel drums all weekend while I was on a road trip.

The song with the highly-flammable steel drum beat that KodakĀ has been teasingĀ in snippets where he’s dancing in his sensibly understated lavender church sweater for the last month or so finally came out, and I’m thankful to say that not only did it live to see the light of day unlike other fire snippets that never lived to see the light of day likeĀ ones from Kevin GatesĀ orĀ Ya BoyĀ Big Choo, it also lived up to the hype. The D.A. Doman beat could cure a lot of the world’s problems, you get a simple but incredibly catchy hook from Kodak, and solid verses from Kodak and Offset. An all around solid effort on all levels and certainly a song of the year contender for me. Also my favorite Kodak song I’ve heard since probably some time last year.

My only real gripe is Offset’s lazy ā€˜in the middle of the field like David Bekcham’ line because it just sounds dated at this point and David Beckham wasn’t even really a central midfielder in the first place, he couldn’t have said someone more current/central like N’Golo Kante or Tanguy Ndembele or someone and rhymed soemthing with that? But hey c’est la vie.

Peezy ft. Cash Kidd, Big Rizz – Duckin’ WreckĀ

Peezy is out here living his best life right now. Seriously this guy is like a fine wine just getting better and better with time (Pause! Pause!). Peezy has emerged from being a consistent, reliable performer in the Detroit scene to now making a strong case for being at the very top of it (although I’m also partial to be FMB DZ but they’re almost a 1a and 1b to me at this point). I saw the homieĀ Ray GarratyĀ postĀ Duckin’ WreckĀ the other day and couldn’t wait to check it out. I usually post my favorite line or two from every song but in this case the entire verse just went so hard that I couldn’t even pick out one line and wanted to post the whole thing…

ā€œWe ain’t ducking wreck we want all the smoke; in a Hellcat fresher than a bar of soap. Sippin’ syrup out the pint like I caught a cold, catch a nigga down bad he thought he saw a ghost. Heard he said he was a shooter and he keep a stick, still livin’ with his mama, drivin’ a piece of shit. Get your head knocked off you ever make the list, you ain’t fuckin’ with my son, boy get off my dick. Bentley trucks and G-Wagons riding down Ocean, rose gold dog tag off the diamond choker. Never played in no Finals but I’m buying trophies, I’m talking chains full of diamonds with the matching Rollies. Balling on these little niggas I was made to flex, youĀ  can’t do it like me you better save your checks. Knockin’ niggas off the board like I’m playing chesss, Team East, Ghetto Boys, nigga fuck the rest.ā€

On a side note, as someone who drives a piece of garbage for a car, I usually don’t feel great when rappers call people out for driving cheap cars, but in this case I can definitley feel where Peezy is coming from when he says ā€œHeard he said he was a shooter and he keep a stick, still livin at his mama’s house driving a piece of shitā€ as the guy across the street from me still lives with his mom and parks his garbage car in front of my house every day even though there’s a whole plethora of spots outside of his parent’s house. Although in fairness I don’t think he calls himself a shooter like whoever Peezy is talking about.

Young Thug ft. T-Shyne – Real in My Veins

My favorite song off of Jeffrey’s ‘On the Run’ EP. This whole project was great I definitley listened to this a lot more times than Slime Language. Upon first listen the Elton John-assisted ‘High’ was an easy favorite but after a few more listens Real in My Veins emerged as the crown jewel of the tape. I don’t know much about T-Shyne but I really liked his verse here and upon further research it looks like he features Max B on his album so he’s good in my book. I have to listen to that next. I love Thug’s chorus ‘I’ve got real running through my veins’ and the message, and I love the part where T-Shyne says ‘I called my dad and told him that we made it.”

Rod Wave – Way UpĀ

Man I’ve really been sleeping on this guy. Nice song and video from Rod Wave out of Tampa, as if Florida needed more good artists. This was on his Hunger Games 2 album that came out a couple of months ago but the video just came out a few weeks ago. I remember this guy was talking about Rod Wave a year ago.Ā

I slept on Hunger Games 2 for way too long. It’s too early to say but the tape is a borderline classic in my opinion, you can listen to the first 6 tracks over and over again with no skips and it stays flammable the whole time.

Young Thug ft. Elton John – High

So this happened. When I first saw this my initial thought was that this looks like one of those collaborations that sounds like it should be really good but will inevitably end up being bad/disappointing, but it actually did end up being good. It sounds like it would be a wierd combination, but then again, I can picture Sir Elton having a decent amount in common with Thugga.

Kevin Gates – Discussion

The opener off of Gates’ excellent ‘Luca Brasi 3’ project which had a couple of songs featured here last month and keeps producing more and more gems the more times I listen to it. I love the intro of Gates talking about wanting to get back from jail to see his kids and the hook goes super hard.

Kevin Gates – Great ManĀ

LOOK IN THE MIRROR, AND I SEE A GREAT MAN!

I started writing this top 10 before the video for this song came out but it looks like now it has a video which is blowing up. The song is great on its own accord; Gates is really baring his soul here and showing what elevates him above the run of the mill artist but the video adds a nice additional layer of depth to what he’s saying. This is the type of song I would listen to every morning at the gym, if I wasn’t too lazy to go to the gym.

Mozzy – Run to the MansionĀ

Dope song by Mozzy and my favorite off of Gangland Landlord. People who read this blog might be surprised because for whatever reason I just haven’t really written about him/mentioned him much but gun to my head Mozzy is one of my favorite current rappers and if I had started this blog say 2-3 years ago instead of in the last year and a half there would have been about 50 Mozzy articles in a row on it. For whatever reason I haven’t been bumping him as much lately but Gangland Landlord was good and I have to get back into his recent stuff and check it out again.

“We got the drums for the hammers/they need the drugs in Atlanta/they got my youngin’ in the slammer/he carry guns on the campus/they be on the run for a murder/they just gon’ run to the masion”

The album outro, ‘Tear Me Down’ was really good too.

Rod Wave – Tomorrow /Rod Wave – Praying GrandmothersĀ

Two more Rod Wave bangers I’m hella late on. This guy definitley has a gift. Incredible voice, great charisma/a lot of soul, and dope songs. He should definitley be a bigger star and maybe he will be soon.

Quando Rondo – Kiccin ShitĀ

Always down for some new Quando Rondo. Always melodic AF. I didn’t realize he was a Crip until this song.

42 Dugg, Peezy, EWM Kdoe, Bagboy Mel, Cash Kidd, EWM Buck – STFU

More heat from Peezy/Cash Kidd & co. Great group cut. I’ve been meaning to post this one for a while after seeing it on Sislafami a while ago and I’ve been bumping it a whole bunch again this month so I figured this is as good a place as any to mention it.

I’m not sure who’s who in this video besides for Peezy and Cash Kidd obviously but I like the first guy he’s got charisma and some good bars,Ā “I got 100 on this bitch I don’t miss often. Back to back Cats I don’t miss walking” and I love when the third guy says “If they ain’t got no money have them take it out the church offering”

“Got it out the mud I ain’t never did a scam nigga, RIP to all the fallen soldiers, free the fam nigga, shut the fuck up if you ain’t got 100 bands nigga.”

On an interesting side note, at least to me, I’ve noticed a couple of times now, like here in Peezy’s line ‘Got it out the mud I ain’t never did a scam nigga’ line, it seems like there’s a clear hierarchy amongst people engaged in criminal activity, with dealers/robbers etc. clearly being above people doing scams in the pecking order and looking down on them.

Peezy ft. Cash Kidd, Big Rizz – Duckin’ Wreck

I saw the homie Ray Garraty post Duckin’ Wreck the other day and couldn’t wait to check it out. I usually post my favorite line or two from every song but in this case the entire verse just went so hard that I couldn’t even pick out one line and wanted to post the whole thing…

“We ain’t ducking wreck we want all the smoke; in a Hellcat fresher than a bar of soap. Knockin’ niggas off the board like I’m playing chesss, Team East, Ghetto Boys, nigga fuck the rest.”

I previously wrote about Peezy being an underrated hook-smith and that definitely holds true here. The urgent, intense beat is perfect for this song too. Cash Kidd makes a nice contribution here with his usual sense of humor and aggressive flow. “Niggas out here trying to act tough for no reason, probation for a gun, still strapped, Lord Jesus!” It wouldn’t be bad to get a whole collaboration project from the two of them, as they’ve had a couple of good songs together now.

At some point I’m going to have to post a list/mix of top 25 Peezy songs when I stop being lazy and actually work on it.

On a side note, as someone who drives a piece of garbage for a car, I usually don’t feel great when rappers call people out for driving cheap cars, but in this case I can definitley feel where Peezy is coming from when he says “Heard he said he was a shooter and he keep a stick, still livin at his mama’s house driving a piece of shit” as the guy across the street from me still lives with his mom and parks his garbage car in front of my house every day even though there’s a whole plethora of spots outside of his parent’s house. Although in fairness I don’t think he calls himself a shooter like whoever Peezy is talking about.

It almost feels crazy to write a ‘top 10 songs of December 2017’ after just doing a top 50 songs for the year 2017 but there’s just too much going on right now to skip it. This month had new albums from Shy Glizzy and Lil Boosie, a new mixtape from Lil Wayne that was more interesting in theory than practice, a couple new albums from some of Detroit’s lovely ladies like Molly Brazy and Cuban Doll, and was capped off with ‘The Gift’ from FMB DZ. As you can see below I’m still on my Detroit grind right now with a couple of tracks by longtime favorites making some heavy, profound music (and an unexpected rainbow-haired interloper) mixed in.

Sada Baby – Free 80’s

“Real nigga look me in my eyes, I ain’t fake at all.”

While December was an amazing month for new music with new albums from heavyweights like Shy Glizzy and Lil Boosie to Sada Baby’s fellow Detroit native FMB DZ, I don’t think I listened to any song more times on repeat this month than ‘Free 80s’. There’s just something about the swagger and veneer that Sada brings to the track that makes this song compelling, more so than any specific line or lyric. Taylor Greer of Fake Shore Drive described it best, saying “The truth is, Detroit is in a league on their own, and has been for some time. The artists and music that you hear in the city, provide a glimpse into a culture surrounded by ingenuity and preserved by the hustle. So when you hear artists like Sada Baby or 80’s spit, just know you’re not just hearing lyrics over a beat — you’re actually hearing the ingenuity of the artist’s hustle.”

I love the cameo from FMB DZ in the video when Sada Baby mentions him (making multiple appearances on this songs of the month list even when he’s not actually in the song!) supporting his fellow Plymouth Road rapper, as well as the cameo from Tee Grizzley’s chain.

The vest with no shirt under it combination does not work for most people and I certainly wouldn’t dare try to pull it off but Sada just has so much swag he’s able to pull it off and override any concerns that the average person would have when rocking that look. (Now I’m not saying I want this to spark a trend, let’s keep it to just Sada for now).

“I won’t talk about no shit that I don’t know bout. If that chopstick ain’t on me I don’t go out.”

“I’m an east side nigga with a roll on me. I can’t say none of my niggas ever told on me. They won’t ever let no other niggas roll on me. Big face (???) type of niggas never fold on me. Tooda Man gon do what’s right if you act wrong on me. He done killed a nigga if he swung on me. Know I kill a nigga if he swung on me. Bang bang close range I got blood on me. Step on the work like it’s a motherfucking rug. I can’t talk to nobody unless I’m off my drugs.” (I love the look that Tooda Man grills the camera with when he’s mentioned in the verse).

“I’m in Cali you niggas at home want to trade places? I’m just out here facing, stacking, yelling free 80s!”

“Burberry shirt cost an ounce of cookie, young Skuba Steve different type of rookie. Monkey nuts everywhere the wop look like Jumanji.”

The ‘Free 80’s’ title and chorus are in reference to Eastside 80s, an imprisoned Detroit rapper. All of the current wave of Detroit rappers go hard but Sada Baby also adds in a twist of personality and humor along with some wierd flows and wordplay to give him a style all his own. No one else besides him could pull off a red ranger Power Ranger tattoo and actually make it look kind of dope. I’m in the middle of listening to his new mixtape ‘Dat One Nigga’ right now and should have a couple of highlights from it up here soon. Sada Baby already ‘blew up’ in 2017 but I think we’re going to be seeing him everywhere in 2018.

FMB DZ – All the Smoke

I’m tempted to say that no rapper had a bigger/better 2017 than FMB DZ or burst onto the scene with more of a bang.

A perfect Yuletide gift indeed from a gun-wielding, Buffs-sporting Santa Clause…

ā€œNigga ain’t my man if he ain’t riding with me, I fuck with the BandGang I got Mas with me. My nigga (?) got a sleeve and a 550, I got popped I could have died I had God with me. A nigga gotta die if a nigga want beef. Free my nigga 80’s I’m good in the East. You know this bitch a classic with Ant on the beat. Niggas know that I’m gonna shoot so they pass it to me.ā€

ā€œYou’ve got guns I got guns we can shoot it out. I’m aiming for a nigga’s head I ain’t killing clouds. Lord forgive me always been a wild child, two FNs and two chopsticks cost me five thou. Nigga telling me I’m next bitch I’m up now, I’m in Houston making plays bitch I feel like Yao.ā€

ā€œPut a nigga on your block so we can find the house, firebomb will chop y’all down while you’re running outā€

I ended up lazily forgetting to put together a top 20 mixtapes/albums to go along with the top 50 tracks of 2017 that I did a couple of posts ago, but it’s safe to say FMB DZ would be on the list twice this year; once for The Gift and once for Washington DZ.

Shy Glizzy – Take Me Away

From the previous post…

The Glizzy Gang head honcho has a knack for these heavy but melodic songs like this that focus mainly on death and what people will be saying when he’s gone/what type of legacy you leave behind, i.e. this one and 2015’s ā€˜Funeral’, which was previously Glizzy’s finest work in my opinion. ā€˜Take Me Away’ is the standout track from his recent ā€˜Quiet Storm’ album and may challenge Funeral for his career best so far.

I love the montage setting the mood in the beginning of the video, with the random, dispassionate shots of Glizzy’s hood (the overgrown back alleys behind apartment buildings, clotheslines, staircases, the D.C. skyline off in the distance, a police helicopter circling overhead, guys posted up on the corner) interspersed with him walking in the rain and waiting in his house with police sirens outside the window. The cold, sobering beat goes perfect with it. I’m certainly no expert on this type of thing but the intro is A+ cinematography. It really feels like the calm before the storm.Even the title ā€˜Take Me Away’ goes perfectly with this vibe.

From a fashion perspective, I’m not sure if I’m feeling the Supreme umbrella but those Georgetown Hoyas shorts are fire. Bonus points since he’s representing DC AND because I looked for them online and couldn’t even find them so a rare gem indeed. (Another side note – Lightshow also had a song called ā€˜Burberry Umbrellas’ recently. What’s with these DMV-area rappers and high-end designer umbrellas?).

The chorus is simple but hits hard – ā€˜If the streets take me away, a real nigga I die.ā€ He’s come to terms with the fact that he can die any day in the environment he’s in and while he’ll survive at all costs at least if he dies he feels like he never caved in or folded and no one can say he wasn’t ā€˜real.’ It’s a steadfast but sobering message and I would imagine this song was probably influenced by the recent death of 30 Glizzy.
