Big Fenc ft. Rio da Yung OG, Dink, Sid Dawg – Can’t Fall Off

Obviously this site has been the ‘All Rio All the Time’ 24/7 Rio Da Yung OG coverage channel lately (and rightfully so!), so of course I scoped out this video out to see the Rio verse. But every now and then when you click a video just to hear the artist you want to hear you end up being blessed with an all-time gem from a bunch of other guys you’ve never heard of.

Flint Michigan linking up with Kalamazoo Michigan for one of the dopest songs I have heard in a long time. I’m loving the fuzzy-sounding production of the beat. From the hook, to the production/sample to all 3 verses, everything about this song is on point – Even just the overall message of refusing to fall off. This is real hustle music.

“Bitch I’m the big homie, I can put you on, and I can get a nigga offed if he try to do me wrong” might be one of the hardest lines I’ve ever heard, there’s not much to it but it just sounds so hard. (Big Fenc looks intense, I definitely would not want to ‘do him wrong’ and get on his bad side).”

The hook from Sid Dawg is godly. “Bitch I can’t fall offffff, I’m so up right now, I can throw it all right now. Niggas wanna shine like me, but they can’t grind like me, I can’t fall off”. This hook has me feeling motivated. (I’m feeling the Charles Barkley Rockets jersey too).

Dink’s verse is so dope and just has so much heart. I love the resilience of ‘Bitch I can’t fall off, as long as the stove on, big timer motherfucker I get my roll on.’

‘Bangin’ stone after stone that boy in go mode, gettin cream off that ice nigga, Cold Stone.”

And then Rio comes in as the closer throwing 105 MPH heat. “Nigga up the strap on me and bust he gon die shooting, grip the Glock while I grip the wheel I can drive it and shoot it”

“Bitch I can’t fall off I know I said it once, real hustle – I can’t find the Runts I’m bagging Reggies up”

“I can get a bag gone in Kalamazoo, doggie said he want some horse tranquilizer met him at the zoo.”

See the source image

“My nigga Euro keep a laptop he be hacking computers.”

Does Rio ever take a break? No he does not. He’s putting on the whole state here.

The Michigan winter is cold but all 4 of these dudes (not to mention the producer) are firing on all cylinders and bringing some absolute flames.

*Spoiler Alert – I think at this point it’s between Can’t Fall Off and a certain CML song for song of the year on my year end list, with perhaps a dark horse or two still in the mix

Bericcus ft. Rio da Yung OG – Got Testers

This is like the 4th time in a row Rio has linked up with someone I’ve never heard of and made it into pure heat. Rio has the Midas touch except that everything he touches turns into flames. I was actually going to post a different song today but then I saw that this came out today and I was just too hyped about Rio’s verse not to post it instead. My man Ray Garraty is going to have to make another addition to his Rio loosies mix or maybe just wait for a volume 2 soon because this guy never stops. Rio is just relentless – who else can rap like this –

“I just linked up with BC, I ain’t have no cut I hit the powder with some BC, slick nigga, I put the play on Unc they say I’m greazy, .22’s bounce through your body like a P3 (?), back to back to back when we drink red got it on repeat, put your glasses on I’m bout to shoot the Glock in 3D, hit the button, shoot for 20 minutes this an EP, I just bought another pint from my Titi, my nigga doing life he said he good he need a TV, my Arab bought a zip that nigga rich he own a BP.”

One of the nicest verses/lines I’ve ever heard.

Bericcus sounds like he could be a feared Roman emperor with that name and he has a couple of nice lines here too; “Dodging potholes it’s just me and Ri, real shooters follow niggas home just like TMZ.” That OG Memphis Grizzlies jersey is tough. And I like that these Detroit/Flint rappers are bringing back Timbs.

RMC Mike ft. RLSG KD – What’s Love

Didn’t even get a chance to post this during the month but this RMC Mike interpretation of ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ from his ‘Rookie Season’ tape from earlier this year is just too smooth. “Your daddy got knocked out by a fiend ’cause he served him shake.”

RLSG KD kicking some knowledge at the end about not being TOO customer-friendly. This is one field where the old adage ‘the customer is always right’ does not apply.

CML – Drip Drop

Always-reliable CML getting some of that Cash Money, D-Rock production, and floating over it as you would expect. CML’s hooks are always good enough to find yourself singing along to. “Drip drop, I’m on the tip top, Super Bowl ring with the wrist watch.” I never get tired of rappers comparing their rings to Super Bowl rings.

“Put a rapper in a bag like a gift shop”

Kanye West – On God

What can I say, this is actually fire. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Pierre Bourne snapped on this beat. No feature from Joel Osteen unfortunately but maybe next time. Kanye rides out on this.

ShittyBoyz – Lamb Chops

These guys really, really don’t tolerate any delays or mistakes from restaurant staff, as evidenced in the chorus here and throughout the rest of their catalogue. A little bit of a departure from their usual more upbeat, freestyle-type production but they go hard over this more bleak, dark type of beat. “SB we the hottest in the universe, hit the runts now I’m blade dancing up on Jupiter”

Allstar JR ft. Overlord Scooch – Coutnted Last Night

‘Counted Last Night’ from Allstar JR and one of my all-time favorite rap names Overlord Scooch is just so damn smooth. JR and Scooch both making an appearance for the first time in quite a while on this site going back to last winter. From Allstar JR’s ‘Get a Bag or Go Home 2’ project form this summer. I feel like I could sleep on silky sheets of this sax sample.

Big Colin x Rio da Yung OG – Ghetto Boys

This beat from 1800it is so fucking cold. Even Rio’s young bols are snapping.

It feels refreshing to see someone embrace ‘Big’ as the prefix to their rap name with all these ‘Lil’s’ running around out there.

No homo but I’m kind of feeling this dude Big Colin’s voice. That ‘Drakeo hold 100 like two 50-pound dumbells’ line is so hard.

“2400 that can get you a bow sale, we ain’t breaking shit down we mailing it wholesale.”

“Police hit my crib, and I was madder than a bitch, it was God on my side them bitches didn’t find my stick, they done fucked up my crib tryna find them zips like I told you once befor we ain’t breaking down shit!” I absolutely  love the part at the end where Rio/Colin’s whole crew yells along with Colin as he raps that last line, ‘Like I told you once before we ain’t breaking down shit!’

ShittyBoyz Babytron ft. Allstar JR – Bag Szn

BabyTron and JR over some more of that dope freestyle production that Crimedawgbylaw has been talking about. JR making not just one but two appearances on the list this month! “Left the Glock at the crib? I’ma throw a bomb” just sounds so damn resourceful. I love the “I rap and I punch, Def Jam Vendetta” line Babytron really keeps quotable after quotable up his sleeve.

Rio da Yung OG x Lil E – Touchdown

I’m not sure if this is even a song so much as it’s a conversation between two veterans in the game over a nice beat, but either way, it goes hard and Rio da Yung OG and one of his many cohorts, Lil E, trade some serious bars over ‘Touchdown”. This is off of a new joint project ‘Professional Shit Talking’ with Rio and Lil E, right after Rio also just put out his ‘2 Faced’ tape. I also heard Rio mention somewhere that he has another new project coming out soon called “City on my Back.” Rio’s work ethic is unmatched, he’s like the rap games John Henry, a man outpacing the machines.

“My lil niggas want to kill some opps, I told em stand down.” Lil E is like a wise general, prudently showing some foresight and restraint; playing the long game in the trenches, giving good advice to his young hotheads and telling them to cool down. Frankly the world would probably be a better place if we had more Lil E’s. Between that and “Invest all our money in real estate, fuck a bust down,” I feel like Lil E is one of the most sensible men in rap. And may I just add, it feels refreshing seeing a rapper rocking a hoodie of a local sports team (and a gritty, nasty one at that in Michigan State) instead of some overpriced effeminate-looking designer hoodie.

I loved the “I just dodged a fed case I gotta crack a smile” line, who could argue with that?

“The police hit the crib two times, we bought some more houses”

Rio just goes crazy on this as always; “I got on sandals cooking dope at my hoe’s house, you know this shit finna be good I got my toes out.” So relaxed.

“.308 bullet this bitch’ll go through 4 houses”.

“When I was young I went skating ’cause the hoes was out, I pulled a strap out at the rink and made them roll bounce”. Rio is the grimiest.

ShittyBoyz Babytron ft. Lil Yachty – Lost It

Even more synthy freestyle production with from Babytron, this time featuring, surprisingly, Lil Yachty. I certainly wasn’t expecting Lil Yachty to be a feature on Babytron’s project and in all honestly I was not expecting to post a song with Lil Yachty on this site in 2019 but here we are. His voice/flow actually adapt pretty nicely to this type of song. Alright Lil Boat I see you out here.

03 Greedo, ALLBLACK, FMB DZ, Freddie Gibbs, Jeno Cash, Peezy, Prada Mack, Top 10, Waka Flocka Flame

MAKE ME SAY UHHHHH LIKE A MIX OF MASTER P AND RICK ROSS (Pause! Pause!)

Here’s my top 10 songs from the month that first brought us… this?

ALLBLACK ft. 03 Greedo, Prada Mack – Florida Gator

The ALLBLACK and Greedo tag team take the crown for June, from the original post…

“Here ye here ye, your host is hereby temporarily abstaining from the Martorialist-issued embargo on listening to rappers with septum piercings, which as you know, I usually strictly adhere to as they are wise words to live by, but ALLBLACK has me breaking the embargo. (Plus, ALLBLACK actually looks pretty badass with his, unlike some rappers who get them and just end up looking like bratty kids that hang out at Hot Topic.). I originally came here for 03 Greedo’s chorus but left as a new fan of Oakland’s rose-gold-grilled ALLBLACK. (I’m definitely feeling this rose gold grill).

ALLBLACK is certainly a character, and he links up with another big personality here in 03 Greedo in this ode to Florida Gators of an entirely different nature (and nothing to do with Tim Tebow or Aaron Hernandez). ALLBLACK mixes that old school, Oakland/Bay Area attitude with the newer vibe of these Soundcloud era type guys that dress like punk rockers. I fucking love what he’s saying here in his verse… “Y’all want ALLBLACK to be like James Stacy, wouldn’t stop running if the doctor amputated my legs… grinding like Chris Cole cause I gotta keep Maxine fed… take the pedals off the bike and I’ma hop on the pegs”. (By the way I feel like Chris Cole and James Stacy are two of the most random/unexpected references ever in a rap song and here they are basically in the same line). ALLBLACK’s verse and whole flow/vibe have grown on me very quickly and now I’m blasting his verse all the time. His song Canadian Goose is a flamer as well.

Could Greedo’s hook here possibly be any more flammable? 03 Greedo on auto tune is on a whole different level. God Level perhaps? It’s just a short cameo from him here on the hook and no verse but it sounds heavenly. My only complaint is I wish they looped it in a couple more times at the end or something.

ALLBLACK is definitely adding his own spin and style to the Bay and really out of nowhere is turning into one of my new/recent favorites and this and Canadian Goose are turning into two of my most heavily-played songs of this young summer so far. FREE GREEDO!

Jeno Cash, FMB DZ, Peezy – Dog Food

The 03 Greedo/ALLBLACK combo is pretty serious but Peezy and FMB DZ is a formidable pairing in their own right. Saw this on Ray Garraty This beat is crazy. I like the idea of Peezy as a hook guy more people should start using him for that. I’ve been on a big Peezy grind for months and it’s always good to hear new stuff from him especially after his near death experience over the winter when he got shot. By the way is it just me or does Peezy’s shirt look like something some flamboyant Italian tourist would wear in the 80s? But when you’re Peezy you can pull it off. Overall it was nice to hear all these guys together on a track and this is so far one of my favorite songs to blast out of the whip in 2018.

ALLBLACK – Canada Goose

Me and Icebergsweater have been rocking out to ALLBLACK heavy, and Canada Goose is another banger from him. He looks comfy AF in that fleece too I respect it.

“ALL MY BITCHES GOT ON CLEATS, THEY DON’T TRAP IN HEELS”

Freddie Gibbs – Weight / Freddie Gibbs ft. 03 Greedo – Death Row

I probably haven’t listened to Freddie Gibbs as heavily as a lot of other bloggers or readers and I’m not super familiar with his back catalogue but I gave his new project Freddie a spin and definitley enjoyed it. I mean come on how could you not be down with this album cover. My favorite song was the opener, Weight and I also loved the fairly ridiculous ‘FLFM’ interlude and of course, the 03 Greedo-assisted Eazy-E homage Death Row. I’ve obviously been listening to a ton of Greedo but I wasn’t  expecting to hear him on this album so this was a pleasant surprise. We haven’t even gotten into God Level yet and there’s already 2 songs on my June top 10 with Greedo just on the hook or as a feature.  (P.S. listening to new albums by Freeway and Freddie Gibbs this month has me feeling like it’s 2008 out here).

Waka Flocka Flame – Flava / Waka Flocka Flame – Smoker

Two songs from Waka Flocka Flame’s fairly unheralded comeback ‘Big Homie Flock’ clock in here too…

“I didn’t realize how much I missed Waka Flocka until I decided to give his new tape Big Homie Flocka a couple of spins over the last week. There’s a couple of bangers on here, including Flava and Smoker.

https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/7ji40oy9LRWpZ41vnMOodo

Flava

Flava brings forth that classic Waka Flocka sound, like a mix of trap music and just straight up mosh music. “I’m doing shows selling bails at the same time, I’m taking business calls and trapping off the same line.” I love the almost gleeful way he croons about taking business calls and trapping on the same phone, clearly relishing his niche he’s carved out as a businessman who can get paid to do obscure EDM shows in Europe while still having a foot in the streets. I love the ridiculously long, overstated ‘B-rr-r-r-r-r-r-r’ phone ring ad lib after it.

“Hot Boy like I’m BG, broad day you can meet me at the BP”. Flocka has never been a lyrical wizard or anything but there’s just something about his lines like these and the way he delivers them that still make them memorable. Also, in case you haven’t noticed, I’m always a sucker for rappers that post up trapping at the gas station and tell you to meet them there.

“I put Christians on wifey she a walking blessing”

Smoker

https://open.spotify.com/embed/track/5fewe9dkYD7jjbUfIPhIEV

The chours for this one goes hard as fuck…

“Ay my smoker cooking dope for me, they say there ain’t no hope for me, white folks got the rope for me, my shooter bought a scope for me”

I’m loving these over the top Waka ad libs in the background after not hearing them in a couple of years. You’ve also got to respect Waka’s efficient utilization here; having one of his customers cooking for him and a shooter on his payroll gifting him an expensive scope. That’s what I call getting the most out of your investments.”

03 Greedo – Fall Off

God Level certainly lived up to the hype and is a pretty legitimate masterpiece for Greedo as his last album before he begins his prison sentence. There’s a good 10-12 legitimate bangers on here which is pretty ridiculous when you consider that a lot of artists are releasing albums that are 7 songs now. Fall Off is my early favorite from the album but really any of about a dozen of them could be on this list. This is a six minute tour de force by Greedo and a good message of resilience and determination about refusing to fall off or give in before starts his prison term. This one is almost hypnotizing with the beat and chanting, recurring chorus.

03 Greedo – Gun Bucc

Another selection from God Level. This beat is sick and Greedo kills it as usual.

Kanye West & Kid Cudi ft. Pusha T – Feel the Love

Kanye West & Kid Cudi – Reborn

Kanye West – Ghost Town

I wasn’t expecting to be into this string of Wyoming albums that Kanye has been putting out, and there were certainly plenty of misses to go with the hits, but curiosity got the better of me and I’ll be the first to admit that I surprisingly really enjoyed Kids See Ghosts, which is weird since I’ve never been a Kanye fan one way or the other, and I’ve never gotten into Kid Cudi, and have found them to be fairly self-indulgent artists, but this album was pretty epic. The ‘I Can Still Feel the Love’ chorus being shouted out is dope and I love the part where Kanye spazzes out making the gun sounds at about 1:07. I thought it had to be Desiigner at first!

Reborn was another highlight of this string of projects to me. Sort of a similar sentiment to Greedo’s aforementioned Fall Off.

Ghost Town was my favorite song off of Ye, the album preceding this one, and seems like it could easily have fit into Kids See Ghost as an honorary eighth track. It was pretty out there compared to what I’m usually looking to listen to but it’s another gem from Kanye’s recent slew of Friday releases. A quick side note is that while I wasn’t really into about half of the material that came out from this weekly spate of releases and while complaints about them being only 7 songs certainly are understandable, I have to give this guy credit because it built up a lot of excitement and it really made each release seem like an ‘event’ and something that everyone was talking about, which I don’t feel like we often get to say about album releases anymore in this streaming age so I have to give credit for that.  (P.S. I still wish he used that picture of the doctor as his album cover and really called it Love Everybody becasue it would have just been so over the top and troll-y but alas it wasn’t to be).

Top 10 Songs October 2017

3 Problems, 90s Baby, Atlanta, Ball Greezy, Bay Area, Dezigner Drugs 3, Florida, Future, Gucci Mane, Hoodrich Pablo Juan, Key Loom, Koly P, Kolyon, Lost Key, PC Tweezie, Que, Super Slimey, Top 10, Vandam Bodyslam, Young Thug

PC Tweezie – Really

Tweezie brings back that throwing ‘bos in the club type music and takes the crown for top song of October with ‘Really’…

“PC Tweezie opens strong and makes his presence felt right away, pummeling the opening verse, “I was really in the trenches with them wolves, I really tote a .30 hit the gas if I get pulled. I’ll really beat your ass run up on you like a bull, I’m really getting fat them hos say I’m getting full.” I love everything about this verse –  The hit the gas if I get pulled line just sounds badass AF, while in the days of rappers talking about their nose rings and desinger messenger bags it just feels refreshing to hear PC Tweezie rap about doling out a good old-fashioned beating and literally taking food off of other inmate’s plates. Lastly, I definitely respect that his hos are admiring his weight gain, because usually when I put on some extra pounds I end up just getting fat-shamed into jogging so he definitely has some serious clout.

In possibly my favorite rhyme of ‘extension’ and ‘extension’ ever, Tweezie deftly deploys it in two different usages and some pretty evocative imagery that shows he’s absolutely not fucking around: “I really keep a 40 glock that came with the extensions, I’m quick to bat a bitch and drag a ho by the extensions.” (Made even better by the ‘I’m silly’ ad lib right after).”

A big added bonus here is the headlines on the newspaper graphics in the video i.e. “Tensions Rise in Local Prison” with the byline “PC’s First Day in Lockup Didn’t Go So Well for the Other Inmates”

Ball Greezy ft. Mike Smiff, Kase 1, Major Nine – I Deserve it All

Some more Florida smoothness from Ball Greezy and co., via Rapmusichysteria , the undisputed expert on Ball Greezy and Florida slaps in general.

From Rap Music Hysteria…

“Like Kodak Black, who combines new-gen meme literacy with older rap styles, Ballgreezy stands between movements but remains outside them, continuing in a post-jook mode while softening its Dionysian edges with grown-man world-weariness. At times he resembles one of the mournful songmen of today; this might be the case, and yet Greezy was crooning before Wayne and Kanye broke down the R&B doors and liberated moping for the kids of today.”

Ball Greezy kills it with a heavy but resilient verse, half rapping, half singing…

“Niggas wonder why Greezy don’t smile… I’ve been through the ups and downs, the back and forths the round and rounds. A real food stamp baby, born and raised in Little Haiti, I can’t lie the streets ain’t been the same lately. Niggas don’t keep it G no more, see they don’t make ’em like me no more. Red and blue lights behind me, where the heat gon go? Surrender or shoot it out? I heard they don’t care about you and I. I’m tired of even living like this. How the hell do you raise kids like this.

“They told me that I would never ever be shit, now my watch and my chain make them seasick”

Que ft. Sada Baby – 90s Baby

From my previous post…

“For whatever reason, I have to admit I’ve been sleeping on Que and have never really gotten into him/checked out much of his stuff. I guess I had heard OG Bobby Johnson back in the day and wasn’t super into it/didn’t see what all the hype was about and then kind of forgot about him. But let me be the first to say, I’ll be DAMNED if his Class Clown EP isn’t a great project with some nice slaps on it. Paramount amongst these was ’90s Baby’ which I’ve been playing over and over again all month. “I’m a ’90s baby, I keep a little .380, it’s hard to tell it’s on me, that boy thought I was naked,’ Que warns potential foes who may be debating whether or not to run up on him.  Even when he’s by himself he’s never lonely because he has his little .380 with him. Delving deeper I’m not sure what being born in the 90s has to do with keeping a hidden .380 but either way I love this song. ‘He got beside himself, and got to talking reckless, he must not got the memo that me and my niggas PETTY!’ Que continues. As one of the pettiest people you’ll ever meet, I can definitely get behind this type of message.

‘He said he don’t fuck with me, well nigga vice versa… said when he see me… said he was gon do what, to who my nigga? How? You just a class clown.” I like the idea of just telling people that don’t like you ‘vice versa’ and I love how ultimately dismissive it is, ‘To who my nigga how? You just a class clown.”

Top 10 Songs July 2017

It’s been a long, hot July out here, but we’re still hanging in there and I finished my top 10 songs in a bit more of a timely fashion this month. This month took me down a lot of interesting paths as I stayed on my Lil Chicken/Milwaukee grind that started last month via Rap Music Hysteria, then a post from the Martorialist on Berner had me go down a huge Berner rabbit hole and after studying his back catalogue as if I was writing a dissertation on him, made me realize that this husky Bay Area renaissance man actually has quite a few jams, then from there I was bumping another large white rapper Jelly Roll for a couple of days to see what he’s been up to lately, checked out the new projects from A-Wax, Meek Mill, and 21 Savage before getting really into Mac J and having him take over the end of the month.

Lil Chicken – No Grease

This song is from the end of 2016 but Lil Chicken wins the award for hardest first verse of 2017 and maybe hardest song in general with ‘No Grease’ – “See the pain in my eyes this sh*t gettin tiring, eyes get bug as hell when I hear them sirens. Money, diamonds, gold, we a bunch of pirates, watching out for narcs trapping out a hybrid. Fiend keep nodding off man he can’t fight it, this dog biting nigga’s ears punching like Tyson.” I’m not sure what I like better the very apt pirate comparison or the image of him trapping out of a Nissan Leaf or Toyota Prius. I also love the weary, almost strained voice that Big Chicken P raps in on this one; the trap has been good to him but he’s also growing tired of the unwanted complications that come with it.

“All these motherf*cking grits I feel like Rich Porter, b*tch we ain’t no small fries we taking big orders, these niggas b*tches I’m finna change my hustle to extortion, phones slapping back to back they sound like walkie talkies.” Lil Chicken just goes too hard on this one.

Berner – Float

As I said in my mea culpa on Berner, “In a more just world, with this type of chorus and vibes, Berner would be making royalty money off of Sandals or Atlantis or one of those other Caribbean all-inclusive resorts using his song in their newest commercial.” After a long journey into this affable weed/fashion entrepeneur’s catalogue,  I have to admit the man certainly has some gems I’ve missed over the years; the highlight of which would be the airy and enjoyable ‘Float’ from his 2016 Packs album.

Mac J – Differences

I don’t know much about Mac J and only heard about him after reading about him on Rey’s Cafe a couple weeks ago but he certainly has some absolute bangers in his catalogue, my favorite of which thus far is ‘Differences’.  The beat for this one is ridiculous too. Based on the Mac J playlist Rey’s Cafe put together I definitely want to start listening to more of this north Sacramento artist and check out the rest of his output, including his new mixtape ‘Local Celebrity‘.

Lil Chicken – Pitty Pat

“I’ve got it all on me riding round in the foreign, Ballys on, white folks staring at me, make me feel important”

““Me and Max posted up in the stash house playing Pitty Pat, I feel like Chris Brown all these junkies hollering gimme that. Spanish ho like Dora that b*tch pulled up with a mac, said he want 44 watch me pull up with them racks.”

100Clay, 100Clay Recordings, April 2017, Buy Love, Drake, Frank Ocean, Future, Glock Inside My Benz, Gucci Shoes, Jay Z, Kodak Black, Long Island, Moodymann, Nighttime, Passionfruit, Patty Cake, Pi'erre Bourne, Playboi Carti, Polo Hayes, Pull Up Wit Ah Stick, SahBabii, Smokepurpp, Top 10, Tyler the Creator

Future – Buy Love

I found this song via redlitedj.com, a great blog, and had never heard it before, and it ended up becoming arguably my top song of the month. As far as I know it’s a Future ‘loose end’ from January that was probably overshadowed by the two full-length projects that he released in February and the ubiquitous success of Mask Off, but it may actually be my overall favorite song by him to date. The song improbably samples K-Ci and Jo Jo’s ‘All My Life’ and kind of reminds me of a lullaby. As an added bonus I love the nostalgic vibes of the VHS-esque video for the song.

Drake – Passionfruit

Those who know me are probably surprised by this selection as my friends know me as a bit of a Drake ‘hater’ sometimes but I have to admit I did enjoy the ‘More Life’ album, specifically ‘Passionfruit’ and ‘Glow’, and I have to be objective and give credit where credit is due. The light, lilting tropical beat for Passionfruit is so relaxing that at the very beginning of April,  I had listened to it a bunch of times in a row, and almost felt irritated and unrelaxed when it wasn’t on for about a day or so, almost like withdrawal from some sort of depressant drug. For some reason I can picture this song being in the background of one of the Yoshi type video games playing as the Yoshis dance around and enjoy their island paradise. One of the writers for Pitchfork called this version of Drake ‘Margaritaville Drake’ and it really is the perfect description.

Polo Hayes – Gucci Shoes

With over 51k plays on Soundcloud after being out for just 2 months, ‘Gucci Shoes’ by Polo Hayes is blowing up on Long Island and beyond right now and I’m predicting this regional hit could make waves nationally soon because its’ just that good and that unique. Polo is one of the most dynamic and creative artists to come out of Long Island and is garnering considerable buzz right now. He’s affiliated with the same YGRF group as Z$tat$ who I featured the other day. I’m planning on doing a full post about this song tomorrow. Polo comes out guns blazing with these two ridiculous lines in the first verse…

“They don’t want me in the Benzes, with Versace lenses…none of my niggas got pensions, I ain’t never learn my lesson, my AK need extensions, bullets the same size as wrenches”.

“They don’t want me in that ‘Rari, sh*ttin on em never sorry, I know people want to harm me, but they don’t want it with the army.”

He has a lot of other really good songs check out his Soundcloud here
